“Something For the Longing” non è solo una compilation: è una capsula del tempo che riporta a un’epoca in cui l’indie scozzese era un universo in espansione, fatto di fanzine fotocopiate, negozi di dischi minuscoli e band che sembravano sbucare da ogni angolo di Glasgow.
La raccolta di Cherry Red Records, in uscita il 24 aprile, mette insieme tre decenni di fermento creativo, da quando la leggendaria cassetta C86 del NME accese i riflettori su una scena che avrebbe influenzato mezzo mondo. Dentro ci trovi tutto:
il noise-pop abrasivo dei Jesus and Mary Chain,
il retro-cool dei primi Primal Scream,
la dolcezza sghemba dei Bis,
il pop da camera dei Belle and Sebastian,
il buio emotivo degli Arab Strap,
fino all’eclettismo imprevedibile dei Beta Band.
È una storia raccontata in ordine cronologico, ma soprattutto è un viaggio emotivo: quello di una nazione che negli anni ’80 e ’90 ha saputo reinventarsi, sperimentare, rischiare. Una scena che non aveva paura di essere fragile, rumorosa, introversa o stravagante.
Il tutto arricchito da un saggio introduttivo di Grant McPhee, foto d’archivio e alcune chicche inedite donate direttamente dagli artisti. Un oggetto perfetto per chi ha vissuto quegli anni, per chi li ha scoperti dopo, o per chi semplicemente ama quell’inconfondibile miscela di malinconia e brillantezza che solo la Scozia sa dare.
